"Mr. Nowlin has played a vital role in my Christian Education. He is the reason  I chose the field of Social Work. Mr. Nowlin and I would discuss case studies together whenever I came home from college. He is the reason why I chose to work with children. He always told me-“You have to teach them young to express their feelings. When they are older, they’ll be able to utilize the techniques learned.” Thank you Mr. Nowlin for providing me with the motivation to become a successful Social Worker."

 -Scholarship Essay-

Growing up, I was always taught about the importance of altruism and how using it as a guiding principle can help develop my character. Although it seems easy, Unexpected events occur in our lives and adversity can be a big part of what stands in the way moving forward. At the age of 5, I lost my father to a rare cancer in the form of Hodgkin's lymphoma. During this time, I had my mom and football coaches as role models to help mold me into the man I am today. The absence of a father figure that young put me in situations I wasn't quite ready for at that age, yet it gave me a vision to one day help out people who were going through things similar to myself. I
had no idea what exactly what I wanted to do but I knew whatever it was I was going to give it my all no matter what.

Post-college of attending MSU I decided to work and gain some experience and skills that might help me moving forward. I would go to work and come home thinking I had everything figured out, yet I was just another lost soul in corporate America. Gaining bad anxiety and depression, I decided to look for a therapist in the area preferably black with an understanding of my lifestyle
respectfully. Doing this was a big step in my life because it helped me motivate myself again and gain a sense of who I was as a person. This also allowed me to talk about the trauma I faced overtime and get rid of everything that was holding me back. At that moment I realized I too wanted to pursue a career as a clinical therapist and make a difference in other people's lives. I pushed myself to get healthy mentally, physically, and spiritually over the next year and now I am blessed to say I was accepted into Wayne state university 5 years later as an MSW student.

With the opportunity of being accepted into Graduate School, I would like to become an MSW clinical therapist and be a blessing to someone as my therapist was to me. I vision myself opening up my own practice one day and being loved in my community for doing God’s work while making a difference. I want people that went through what I went through to see that they too can make it and know that just because you are a Black man you aren’t limited to career choices. I plan to start a non-profit and develop a brand that will be a movement throughout all communities bigger than myself alone. With this scholarship, it could help me get through graduate school and be able to accomplish everything I have set forth. I am now working full time trying to save and help pay my way through grad school but every bit along the way will be very much appreciated. In closing, I would like to thank you for your time and consideration for allowing me to tell you about myself as well as my future goals and aspirations as an MSW candidate.

Regards,
Julius Johnson

KEN "LEGEND" WILLIAMS (2020)
 Writer | Director
Born in raised in the city of Detroit, I attended Renaissance High School and Eastern Michigan University for film and digital media. As writer and director of the new feature film, Asbury Park, I look to show the inner city through the eyes of a native kid forced to become an adult during his adolescence.

Growing up on the west side of Detroit, I started carrying a gun at 12 years old, but it wasn’t because I was trying to be tough. I carried it because I was being raised in a single-parent home by my mother, people's houses were frequently being broken into, I heard gunshots every night, and if I called 9-1-1 I knew the police weren't coming. My mother was my everything. At night I didn’t always feel safe in my neighborhood.

Inner-city kids often find themselves in unfavorable positions such as these. Asbury Park reveals this plight while exposing the vulnerability of the inner city not typically highlighted in film or television. The film follows four African American teens who struggle to survive, it also exposes the taboo topic of mental health in the black community, as a neighbor kid ends his own life after being bullied. In reality, there aren’t many alternatives for a lot of these children without massive change within our community.

I'm committed to making sure this film is all that it needs to be to evoke change; however, I know I need the help of my community to maximize the authenticity and visibility of this project. Filming has concluded; however, we’re still looking to raise funds to cover post-production, PR, and marketing costs.

Asbury Park will be submitted to the prestigious to the Sundance Film Festival in October 2020. The film stars Glenn Plummer, Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, Jamal Woolard, Fredo Starr, Jermaine Hopkins, and Peter Gunz; however, the majority of our cast is from the Metro Detroit area. One of our talented cast members is Dr. Kim Logan, whom I met at a casting call in April 2019. We’re extremely thankful to her and the Arthur E Nowlin Christian Education Foundation for their support of this project. Kim Logan Communication will receive a special thanks in the end credits of the film due to their generosity.

Asbury Park will serve as a window to the inner city, revealing a world that most don’t know to exist. With your help, we can bring awareness to the issues faced within our community and continue the fight to make things better.

Sincerely,

Ken “Legend” Williams
